Preface

The successful practice of the art of anesthesia, critical care, and pain medicine demands a sound understanding of core scientific concepts founded in physiology and pharmacology. The importance of physiology and pharmacology to anesthesiology is recognized in postgraduate anesthesia training programs and certification examinations worldwide because a
thorough understanding of these disciplines is essential for graduation, certification, and successful clinical practice. Although this scientific foundation is available from a number of sources, the necessary level of detail is often insufficient in introductory texts and perhaps too esoteric in specialized monographs targeted to academics.
