Preface
Studying and reviewing for the board examination or the recertification in pediatric cardiology is often an arduous endeavor. This textbook is an academic dividend of the popular Pediatric Cardiology Review biannual course that was inaugurated by two of the editors (Chang and Eidem) in 2006 in response to a dire need in our field for a high-quality review course and accompanying study materials. The course gathered the elite teachers from the top institutions in the field and had an unconventional format. The review sessions were fast-paced and included many questions and answers throughout the didactic lectures. In addition, special minisessions were designed to address the traditional weak areas such as cardiac pathophysiology, statistics and epidemiology, and electrophysiology.
One of the most popular sessions of the review course has been the board simulation question/answer sessions (with audience response system) in the late afternoons. The enthusiastic attendees would be readily enlightened as to their relative strengths and weaknesses as the editors expound the answers. This ardent esprit de corps made this capstone experience both memorable and educational for all involved. These robust board question/answer sessions inspired the editors to collate the questions and add full explanations especially written for the examinee.
Finally, as our French passionate pilot, poet, and author Saint-Exupéry aptly stated: “The meaning of things lies not in the things themselves, but in our attitude towards them.” We all hope that these examinations will offer small encouragements in our eternal quest for the vast and endless but wondrous field of congenital cardiology.
