Everywoman is a book about women, written for women by Derek Llewellyn-Jones. This text has been a major source of information about women’s health for over 25 years. Derek tells his own story of the conception of Everywoman in Family, a book he wrote for his family. He writes: ‘One day in 1970, I was consulted by the wife of a doctor. During the consultation she said, “My husband tells me that your textbooks are wonderful. Well written and refreshing. He only wished he had them when he was a student. I wish you could write a book for women.”
‘Metaphorically I leapt over the desk and sat in her place. She was right. There was a need to explain obstetrics and gynaecology to women and not write down to them or be patronising. If I could put myself (as far as a man can) in the mind of a woman, I should be able to write the book. I had the advantage that the textbooks contained all the information; all that was needed was a rewrite from the perspective of what a woman wants to know.
‘I wrote to Faber, who were enthusiastic. When could I let them have the manuscript? Could it be within six months? Peter Crawley would be visiting Australia in November; could I give him the manuscript? I replied that I would try. And I did. I handed Peter the manuscript on his arrival. He took it to his hotel. The next morning he rang me and said, “I stayed up reading your book most of the night. I think it will be a winner. But I don’t like your title.” I didn’t either. It was What a Woman Wants to Know. A stupid, patronising title.
‘Peter and I had dinner that evening at the Woolsack in Woolloomooloo. He was leaving for Melbourne the next day. We drank a little too much red wine and talked about publishing the book, and about titles, titles, titles. We couldn’t find the right one. “Let’s go home now,” Peter said, somewhat bleary and drunk. “We’ll sleep on it. I’ll ring you from the airport tomorrow.”
