Neuroanesthesia and neurocritical care encompass the perioperative management of patients suffering from neurologic disease. There have been numerous textbooks on this subject that are generally organized according to basic physiology and pharmacology, neurosurgical procedure, postoperative neurocritical care, and the various techniques and monitoring modalities particular to the field. What has not been available is a comprehensive, case-based approach to the perioperative care of the neurologic patient that allows for an integrated discussion of management principles. This was themotivation behind Case Studies in Neuroanesthesia and Neurocritical Care, which is organized around compelling and realistic clinical scenarios followed by a concise discussion that is practically oriented but nonetheless informed by the current literature. Each brief but high-yield chapter highlights basic principles of neuroanesthesia and neurocritical care (e.g., management of elevated intracranial pressure), as well as classic complications (e.g., venous air embolism or the intraoperative rupture of an aneurysm). Tables, neuroimaging and other visual aids are abundant. Case Studies facilitates clinical preparation, scholarly review, and board examination study. Although written primarily for residents and fellows, the book will be a helpful aid for attending physicians, medical students, nurses and ancillary staff. Case Studies also serves as a quick reference guide for virtually any neuroanesthetic procedure, which is especially helpful for junior residents or student nurse anesthetists that are rotating through neuroanesthesia. The educational philosophy is consistent with the “problem-based learning” approach implemented in numerous medical schools and we hope it will serve as a valuable complement to more traditional textbooks in neuroanesthesia and neurocritical care.
